At 18 months and 9 days, Reece finally says goodbye to infantcare and moves on to the playgroup class at the childcare centre.
While it means we no longer have to drop the boys at different entrances to the childcare centre, it does mean that we have to get two of them into their uniforms each morning. The boys look a bit blurry eyed in the pictures because we had to wake up early this morning.
When we walked past the infantcare entrance, Reece happily waved to his teachers at infantcare. But when we got to the other entrance and he realised he had to go in, he started looking a little weepy and walked away. And this is despite the month that he's spent going over to join the playgroup class at least an hour each day.
I was quite worried at first because he did cry a little and was still looking apprehensive even when the teachers led him to play with other little children. Halfway through the morning, I rang the childcare centre and Riley's teacher reported that Reece was doing perfectly fine so that gave me some relief.
When Weng and I returned in the evening to pick the boys, we couldn't find Reece in the playgroup class or the nursery class. Instead, he was with the kindergarten children, having a second serving of dinner. After finishing the porridge meant for the toddlers, he was eating a bowl of noodle soup that the pre-schoolers were having for dinner. It was quite cute seeing all the 5- and 6-year-olds at dinner, with a toddler running around. And his poor teacher running after him. ;p
According to Riley's Chinese teacher, Reece did have a few crying episodes. And whenever he was anywhere near the infantcare section, he'd seem very happy and think they were bringing him back to the baby class. (And of course, he'd cry when he realised no one was letting him back in there.) But there were familiar faces, of course. And those were the teachers and aunties whom he allowed to feed and bathe him today.
Apparently, after lunch, he insisted on following 李老师, who's the K1 Chinese teacher, back into the K1 classroom instead of sitting with the other toddlers in playgroup class. So 李老师 brought him in for a singing session with the children in K1 and Reece sat next to Riley, holding onto his gor gor's arm. Leaning against Riley, Reece actually fell asleep during the singing session! He woke when the teachers tried to put him down on his mattress so 李老师 had to carry him while he slept.
All in all, I'm glad he managed to eat and sleep properly on his first day away from infantcare. I suppose it'll take him a couple of weeks or even a month. But given that he's very familiar with the place and there are at least four teachers and aunties who used to go over to infantcare regularly during their breaks to go play with him, I'm hopeful he'll settle in happily soon.
Now to just get him his school shorts in size M instead of wearing those in size L which his teachers got for him. Those are so oversized, he looks like he's wearing a skirt!
